HCAD - Total Tax Parcels / Values

Thanks to a bounty of 367,700 parcels and a combined value of $75.93 billion, Hidalgo County is the largest and most prosperous area in southern Texas. The Hidalgo County Appraisal District (HCAD) is tasked with accounting for all of the land and wealth and is usually found to be overmatched for the task. This has led to inaccurate appraisals and higher taxes. Enroll in O’Connor’s Property Tax Protection Program™ and be sure that your taxes are protested every year. It is free to join, and you will never be charged an upfront cost or any fee unless you lower your taxes. Enroll, relax, and save.

HCAD Tax Parcels

Hidalgo County is massive, containing around 367,700 parcels of land as of 2024. This puts Hidalgo as one of the larger counties in Texas, which is no small feat. Valued at $75.93 billion, the county is also blessed with a great deal of worth. It may not be an overinflated boom area like some counties, but Hidalgo is a rock-solid place to live and work. There are also signs of constant growth and a healthy community.

To keep property taxes realistic, residents of the county must protest their taxes annually to make sure everything is fair. O’Connor is here to assist in that regard and will protest taxes for clients every year to ensure they are getting the best deal. Using the power of cumulative appeals, O’Connor will build upon each victory to increase savings every year. As one of the largest property tax firms in the country, O’Connor is the perfect partner for taxpayers in their struggle against the Hidalgo County Appraisal District (HCAD) .

Hidalgo County is the most populated area in Texas outside of the Texas Triangle and is also one of the largest, boasting 367,600 parcels. This is a lot of ground to cover for all of HCAD’s 38 full-time appraisers, yet they managed to survey every single bit of land. Since it is not possible that they assess every house or business individually, that means they use computer-assisted models, historical data, home sales, and simple guesses to fill in the gaps. This is a recipe for incorrect values and taxes, something that has been observed across all of Texas.

HCAD - Total Market Value for All Property

With a total of $75.93 billion in assessed total value, the county is no slouch when it comes to valuable land. This figure has nearly doubled in the past decade, with 2014 seeing only $38.17 billion in total value. This indicates a lot of new construction, along with existing properties appreciating in worth. Growth has exceeded inflation by a large degree but has not strayed into an unsustainable bubble, like other Texas counties.

Single family homes are the primary reason for growth, coming in at a total value of $37.89 billion. Single family homes make up 49.90% of the total value in the county and look to get a bigger percentage every year. Residential property has been surging since 2020, and the rate of growth has increased every year since. Commercial properties came in second with $17.29 billion. Industrial and oil properties also accounted for a solid $14 billion.
