Hidalgo County Value Involved in Lawsuits

Though they are by their nature small in number, lawsuits always punch above their weight class when it comes to the value they contest. Though only a handful of cases, litigation protested a combined $668 million in total value in 2024. This was down from the record of $1.2 billion in 2023, but still one of the biggest values challenged in the county’s history. This is both a strong indicator of the high taxes in the county, and a clear sign that property in the county is becoming more valuable.

Commercial properties protested $617 million in 2024, most of the value. While commercial properties usually have the majority by a large lead, that percentage is one of the most lopsided in Texas. $4 million was contested for a single home, while apartments protested over $31 million in value. Industrial properties managed to challenge $16 in taxable value.
